‘HD 240429’ [Krios] and ‘HD 240430’ [Kronos] is a wide binary star system in the constellation of Cassiopeia. In appearance, both are similar to that of the Earth’s Sun. 350 light years away from Earth, they formed around four billion years ago and originated from the same interstellar cloud. They move together in synchronicity through space and are assumed to orbit each other slowly, with an estimated period of about 10,000 years.
Unlike other binary stars, they are the most chemically different to have ever been discovered. Kronos has a higher abundance of elements such as magnesium, lithium, and iron in its atmosphere than in that of Krios. Because of this, it has lead scientist to believe that Kronos destroyed many of its orbiting planets which is how it earned the nickname, after the Greek god who devoured his children. It is estimated that it it has absorbed at least 15 Earth masses.
Each piece is performed using the same programmed sequence, but with different techniques to yield different compositions. They are intended to express HD 240429 and HD 240430's individual and symbiotic nature.
